seeing the temples in the angkor wat area was an obvious highlight of our trip. what a humbling experience to see these man made wonders. i look back at these pictures in disbelief. the one of the man drawing makes me ponder though if i was fully present or scrambling to capture the moments…

recently on the road, these things have been putting a smile on my face…

an email from a thoughtful friend: “attached is a bottom-less pic of eloise smiling at you & hoping for you to get better soon!!!”

“flat aidan”: for a school project, my eight year old nephew made a paper version of himself to tour the world & learn about other cultures. so my sister & i are touring bali with him…i think he’s having a good time =).

ahhh, phnom penh.

we ended up extending our stay in cambodia, & i was so relieved we did. we chose to skip the city’s tourist sights & spent most of our time roaming the neighborhoods, trying to make sense of the juxtaposition of shiny SUVs & street beggars. sure enough though, the chaotic exteriors revealed the friendliest people & unexpected surprises.

i’m here in bali, waiting for my sister to arrive for a short visit. my friend left a few days ago so, with the exception of my sis, i’ll be rolling solo for the next month. the last week has been rough as i managed to get sick from food poisoning & stomach complications (hence, my prolific blogging!). i’d hoped to spend my time in ubud wandering, biking, hiking, practicing yoga, eating, shopping, meeting people, etc. following were possible trips to burma, laos, nepal, HK, &/or australia. needless to say, my health has affected my plans & stamina. while i rest, i’ve set up a nice lil office on my balcony, where i can enjoy the view of the rice paddies & gaze at the clouds & sunsets.

some random musings occupying my mind…

food: tragically, i haven’t been able to sample much indonesian cuisine. i’m obsessed with asian noodle soups & am craving them like crazy. i can’t stop torturing myself by repeatedly looking at my pictures of the amazing versions we’d tried in chiang mai & phnom penh.

thick scarves:, yet another obsession of mine. i have no clue though why i’m thinking about them in this hot & humid climate. maybe it’s the heat & meds that are making me slightly delirious?

blogging: i struggle with finding a way to balance sharing with anonymity. i’m slowly easing into the blogosphere but it’s a continual battle between wanting to reveal glimpses of my life & thoughts while maintaining a level of privacy.

my future: while i want to keep traveling & am figuring out a way to incorporate it into my lifestyle, i’m anxious to establish roots. upon my return, i’ll be doing a california/pacific northwest roadtrip to revisit seattle & SF as potential home bases. i know these photos & quotes have been circulating online but they perfectly encapsulate my thoughts on the kind of life i envision & strive towards: mindful.

the hiking guy & his pacific crest trail moleskine journals

to capture his northern quest up the 2,650 mile pacific coast trail, the hiking guy documented his thoughts, sights, & experiences in 4 moleskine journals. how rad & inspirational (although i admit, he had me at moleskine). after having watched a nat geo documentary on the appalachian trial, i’m intrigued by these long distance hikes & hikers. i love the simplicity in having to go back to the basics. fueled by passion & dedication, kolby’s story is just a man’s personal journey on foot with pen & paper.

pardon the gratuitous images of tropical paradise but the beaches & islands of the ao-nang area were pretty fucking unbelievable. tourist hassles aside, the white sand, limestone jagged cliffs, & lush scenery were among the most stunning sights i’ve ever seen. & to think we’d only scratched the surface boggles my mind…

i don’t consider myself to be a particularly superstitious person but i do believe in signs & meaning in symbols/objects. here are a few special items i’ve brought or accrued while in asia:

1) the prayer wheel ring i’d purchased in nepal last year, although i sadly have a smaller version as i’d lost the original the last time i was in portland

2) an elephant charm bracelet my friend bought for me in chiang mai

3) a postcard of guanyin, the buddhist goddess of mercy, love, & compassion. i was delighted & surprised when i found her in a supermarket in bali (yes, i’m still catching up on my posts & will share pictures soon!). she’s mostly popular in chinese culture so i didn’t expect to stumble upon her in a mostly hindu area. guanyin has always been my guardian angel, & now i have her on my nightstand =).
